March 2011 – Henley Lions annual Swimarathon took place at LA Fitness on Saturday, 19 March 2011. Over 150 swimmers in 25 teams took part and raised circa £6,000 for a variety of good causes. Many of the swimmers came from local schools and clubs and were sponsored for the total number of lengths swam in the allotted 40 minutes. The team covering the most lengths, 160, was from Eyot Boat Club. Half the money raised will go to the charities supported by the swimming teams. The other half will come to the Lions Charity Fund. The 2 main beneficiaries this year will be Helen & Douglas House and Autistica. The event was reported by the Henley Standard in their 25 March 2011 edition as well as on their web site. |

December 2010 – Lions presented a cheque in the amount of £2,000 to Macmillan Cancer Support, the major beneficiary of Swimarathon 2010. Accepting the cheque on behalf of Macmillan, Julian Knowles, Fundraising Manager for Oxfordshire, praised the club for its sterling efforts and for the value of the amount raised. He explained that Macmillan currently supports about 2/3 of all those who are affected by cancer in one way or another and that the club’s donation would help the local Macmillan branch reach even mores of those cancer patients and their families in our local area. He went on to say that 2011 will be Macmillan’s Centenary Year and that organisations nationwide would be challenged to raise £1,000 each to mark the milestone. |

December 2010 – Late Night Shopping – Club members manned our fundraising stall and supported the town at the annual Late Night Shopping event which was held on the evening of Friday, 3 December 2010 in Falaise Square. Lions braved the sub zero temperatures during the evening at their the Cuddly Lion “Pick a Straw” stall. Many of the cuddly Lions were won by young children who were thrilled with their winnings. Congratulations to Lion Ian Forster who organised the evening on behalf of the club. |

August 2010 – Stonor Craft Fair – Club members organised and manned the children’s play area as they have done for over 20 years and raised £1445 which will be included in our donation to the new Bishopswood Special School handibus. |

August 2010 – Henley Lions presented a cheque in the amount of £1,500 to the local chapter of Samaritans at their August 2010 club meeting. Accepting the cheque on behalf of Samaritans, Bernard Tomlin (director), explained that the funds would allow the chapter to answer circa 1,800 calls, 20% of which would be from callers who were seriously suicidal. Lion President Mel Williams and Lion Richard Hodgkin are pictured along with Bernard & his colleague Carol Morton. The funds were raised as a result of the club’s annual Duck Derby. |

July 2010 – Lion President Lynda Mortimer handed over the club presidency to Lion Mel Williams at a dinner held at Henley Golf Club. Lion Lynda expressed her thanks to all club members and their partners for all that they had done to make her year in office totally fabulous. She recounted all of the club’s achievements over the past 12 months. On taking over the office Lion Mel congratulated Lynda on her very successful year and went on to talk of the increasing significance & contribution of the growing number of ladies within the club and within the Lions movement. |

July 2010 – Henley Lions have awarded this year’s Ron Gilbert Music Award to 2 very deserving students at Gillotts School. Daisy Bayliss and Oliver Barber, both Year 11 students, were each presented with a certificate and a cheque for £100 which is intended to be put towards something which will further their musical development. The awards were presented by Lion President Mel Williams at the final assembly of the school year. Funds for the awards come from a legacy left by Lion Ron Gilbert who was himself a very accomplished musician. |

June 2010 – Henley Lions have contributed £1,500 to the Henley & District Citizens Advice Bureau. Bureau Manager, Christine O’Hare, Chair of Trustees, Patricia Mulcahy and Trustee Treasurer John Morrow thanked Lion President Lynda Mortimer for the donation and explained that the funds would be used to upgrade a good portion of the bureau’s IT systems. |

Lions' charity Duck Derby raises over £2,000

| Lions' Swimarathon a resounding success 6 March 2010 The annual event, held at LA Fitness in Newtown Road, Henley, was opened by Lion President Lynda Mortimer. Twenty seven teams with a total of 126 swimmers took part raising funds for their individual causes. The main beneficiary of the Lions’ share of the funds will be the local MacMillan Cancer Support. Participants came from local schools including Shiplake, Trinity, St Mary's and Rupert House primaries in Henley as well as Henley scouts and guides, Mencap, Headway, and Eyot Boat Club. |
